Privacy PolicyGenealogy and privacy tend to conflict at times. Some sites adopt a blanket policy of not including information about anyone living, which severely restricts the ability of members searching the same lines to contact one another. We try to not be quite so simplistic in our approach, while still respecting and protecting the privacy of individuals.
Subjects The subjects of genealogical information published on this site are mostly deceased, or the information is old enough to be outdated and not invasive to their privacy. Information on approximate date and place of birth is provided publicly by the US Government in the form of the 1930 census, and we reproduce some of that information. So age and state of birth will be published if it is at least 80 years ago. For exact birth-dates and locations, such as provided by birth certificates, we do not include such information unless the date is at least 100 years ago. Detailed marriage information is not published unless it as least 75 years ago. Death information is also provided by the US Government up to the current time (the Social Security Death Index), so we will include that information without restriction. Other information, such as that provided from memorabilia, will be described in the next section on copyright concerns. Copyrights Rec2Gen will not knowingly infringe on any valid copyright. The genealogical information we publish comes mostly from public records, and does not qualify for copyright, since it is not creative work, or comes from expired copyright publications. The memorabilia objects we include, such as photographs, postcards etc., are mostly expired copyright -- but some may fall within the limits of copyright protection, depending on when the authors died -- we can not always know for sure, but to make infringement unlikely, we limit all memorabilia to items believed to be at least 60 years old (i.e. pre-1950). Should we accidentally infringe any copyrights in this process, we will be glad to remove any memorabilia item upon request of any person having copyrights in the item.
